This colorful abstract features the Lockheed P-38 Lightning. Known to the Axis powers as the Fork Tongued Devil, it was one of the most deadly fighter aircraft of World War II. The Lightning was designed by Clarence “Kelly” Johnson and Hall Hibbard within a secretive and separate building which would eventually become known as the Skunk Works. The P-38 first flew in 1938. The single seat, twin boom, twin engined Lightning served as a fighter, bomber, pathfinder, bomber escort and aerial reconnaissance during the war.
